PORTRAIT OF BRITAIN 2019 WINNER

Back in 2018 I emailed Hoxton Mini Press a submission of my portrait project. Although it was rejected they kindly wrote back but with encouragement to keep taking photos. That I did and in 2019 I was picked as a winner for The Portrait of Britain 2019 competition and amazingly got my photo printed in a Hoxton Mini Press Book as long as having my photo shown on 1000’s of JC Decaux screens accross the UK. I hadn’t really taken any portraits until 2017 so is one of my biggest achievements to date.

Back in 2017 I started my project Portarit Per Day in which I started to take a portrait of stranger for all 365 days of the year. Due to how I had used photography to help me deal with my mental health I was honoured to have both and article writen by Alice Evans and a short film made by Nadeem Shad

The Photography Movement

Back in 2018 I was contacted by Scott Shillum who now I am lucky to call my friend. He introduced me to The Photography Movement and shared my photos on their online gallery for a couple of weeks. I hope to work with them more in the future due to the incredible work they do around mental health awareness.

The Photography Movement was launched in 2017 by best friends Scott Shillum and Steve Wallington after they had both lost close family and friends to suicide.

It is a not for profit organisation, fostering a community spirit where individuals of all ages can discuss mental wellbeing through the medium of photography. Through a carefully curated programme of exhibitions, workshops and talks, The Photography Movement enables and encourages people to compose, capture and share images that tell the story of how they feel. Breaking the silence around the sensitive subject of mental health, the movement also raises awareness and funds for charity partners.

Scott and Steve share a life long passion for photography, with Scott having been a national newspaper picture editor for over a decade before founding visual communications agency Vismedia, and Steve working as a creative director for numerous top-tier advertising and creative agencies.

Fragmentary

Established in 2015, fragmentary.org is an arts website focusing solely on exploring the complex issues of mental health and emotions through photographic projects and artworks. Fragmentary is run by photographer and Artistic Director Daniel Regan. Fragmentary was built out of Daniel’s frustrations at not being able to connect with other artists whose work focuses on issues of mental health and wellbeing. Fragmentary publishes works that move, provoke, and stir a dialogue surrounding mental health, the psychology of the self and others, or projects with therapeutic potential. Fragmentary showcases works from artists at varying points in their careers and create a hub of inspiration for those wishing to explore the role of mental health and well-being within the arts.

The CALM Art Collective is a creative space for art lovers and artists of all disciplines and experience to chat, collaborate and inspire each other. It’s about getting many heads and hands around various ideas and provocations to push forward the conversation on mental health and self-expression.

The CALM Art Collective is a place to embrace creativity, explore self expression, meet like-minded creators, and, tbh, just have a good time doing something you love.

AP Magazine

The best thing about thi feature is it was written by Peter Dench. A photographer I have admired for several years. A real honour to have him call me for an interview and bring awareness for mental health awareness month.
